Some
Fulani nomads are reported to have invaded the town of Akateng in the
Upper Manya Constituency of the Eastern Region to register in the
biometric voter registration exercise.
The situation is said to have created tension at the Akateng Primary school registration centre. There have been instances where some Fulanis have been prevented from registering over claims that they are not Ghanaians.
Superintendent Richardson Kumawu, Police Commander for Asesewa told XYZ NEWS he is on the ground monitoring the situation.
Supt. Kumawu indicated that the police cannot just accost anyone for being Fulani. He however indicated that when they are given a heads up about any individual or group of people who want to cheat in the exercise, the police will not hesitate to arrest them.
Since the registration exercise commenced, there have been reports across the country that aliens, mainly Fulanis and Zamrama people from Niger, are being registered in the ongoing biometric registration exercise.
Meanwhile the leader of the Fulani community in Ghana, Chief Alhaji Iddrisu Bingle told XYZ News last week that plans are underway to educate the nomads who are Ghanaians to register. He complained about the manner in which some of the Fulani people are prevented from registering, explaining that this is due to a lack of knowledge on the laws of the country.
