The beleaguered Member of Parliament of Assin North, Hon.
Kennedy Agyapong, has spoken for the first time after being released on
bail on Thursday afternoon.
Hon. Agyapong spent three days in the Bureau of National
Investigations (BNI) cells and has been charged with treason felony,
attempt to commit genocide and terrorism.
Addressing hundreds of jubilant supporters gathered at the NPP
Headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra, the visibly worn-out MP expressed
his gratitude and appreciation for the support shown him during his
detention.
He said: “Friends and loved ones, you have all shown me great love.
Since I came out, I have heard that many have been injured in my
name. I promise to make a personal visit to all of the
injured.”
“I want to thank the Judicial Service for allowing the laws of this land
to work. And with the police, I want to say thank you.
I have realised that the police can function fully if only they
are allowed to.
“I want to thank all supporters, MPs who are here and abroad for showing
me such support,” Hon. Agyapong happily said.
The outspoken Parliamentarian opined that if the large number of
supporters who showed up at the High Court and BNI premises were
anything to go by, he was certain that his party, the NPP would win
power in the upcoming elections.
Commenting on the alleged statements that caused his arrest, Hon
Agyapong said: “The NDC has accused me of inciting violence.
It is not true. The truth is that the NDC know that they will
lose in the Volta region and so they want to capitalise on this matter
to cause problems. I do not hate the Ewes; I have four
children who come from parts of the Volta region - Adidome.
So I do not have hatred for any tribe.”
Hon. Agyapong, who was arrested and charged for allegedly
inciting and inflaming passion, was released on health grounds and is on
a GhC200, 000 bail.
He concluded “I want to say that I stand for the truth, freedom and equality for everyone in this country.”
