Former Vice presidential candidate of the Convention Peoples Party Dr.
Abu Sakara has been declared by the Electoral Commission as the
flagbearer of the Convention Peoples Party for the 2012 elections.
Dr.
Sakara, an agronomist won by 1,130 votes representing 55.2% of the
total votes cast whiles Accra based lawyer Bright Akwetey polled
917votes representing 44.8% of total votes cast.
About 16 ballots were rejected.
A total of 2,300 delegates exercise their franchise to elect a leader for the party.
In his acceptance speech Dr.
Sakara thanked the delegates and his opponent Bright Akwetey “for his generosity and his hard fought contest.”
He used the opportunity to call for unity ahead of the 2012 polls
calling on the rank and file of the party to “think that they can win”
or else they would have a tougher task ahead of the elections.
Bright Akwetey congratulated his comrade for winning the contest and
prayed the delegates to rally behind him so the CPP can wrestle power
from the two dominant parties in December.
