Ken Agyapong's 'treason' trial underway amidst heavy security

The trial of the Assin North MP Kennedy Agyapong has begun at the Cocoa Affairs Court in Accra amidst heavy security presence. Mr Agyapong is being tried for making some treasonable comments on radio.

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party MP have besieged the Court premises where the trial of the lawmaker is underway.

The irate supporters who are clad in red arm bands are reported to be chanting war songs and also demanding the immediate release of the Assin North MP.

The MP is reported to have arrived at the Court premises to face charges of treason leveled against him on Tuesday by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Service.

Kennedy Agyapong was arrested Monday, after making tribal comments to incite Ashantis against other ethnic groups in the country. Speaking on his radio station in Accra, Mr Agyapong declared war over what he said was the violence meted out to NPP supporters by their NDC counterparts across the country.

The lawmaker has been in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over the last 48 hours.

His comments has been strongly condemned by a cross section of Ghanaians, including religious bodies and other political parties

If found guilty, Hon. Agyapong could face the death penalty.
