Our Politicians Must Watch Their Mouth!

FINALLY, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has been charged with treason. The charge, according to the Police, follows investigations into his inciteful statements which called on party members of NPP to war. THE 1992 constitution makes it clear that treason is a first felony crime that is punishable by death. It is also an offence committed where the culprit is not entitled to bail. That means Hon. Ohene Agyapong will not be entitled to bail. However since the case is before the law courts we will leave it there. IT is very disturbing that with 8 months to the December 7 polls, we have politicians in this country who will want to put Ghana on a knife-edge by raising the political temperature to an unimaginable height. Why? We should bear in mind that when Ghana is plunged into chaos and civil unrest we the ordinary people will bear the brunt of its adverse effects. INDEED, we at Today condemn, in no uncertain terms the statements by Hon. Agyapong. These kinds of actions do not in any way add to our fledgling democracy. Instead, they put us in a very bad spot, internationally. We must tell the NPP and the NDC that Ghana does not belong to them. THE situation that the NDC and the NPP see the 2012 election as a do-and-die battle really portends danger for us all. For nothing at all, this is not the first time that Ghana is organising a general election- so the question: Why will each of these two political parties see 2012 polls as a must-win election at all cost? Is it that they want to come to power and amass wealth or they want to improve the lot of Ghanaians? FROM the way members of NDC and NPP are breathing down each other’s neck, we at Today do not have the sense that they are for the interest of Ghanaians — many of whom are poor. For instance, the NDC led by then candidate John Evans Atta Mills during the 2008 electioneering campaign made a lot of promises. BUT today, when we measure the NDC against its 2008 manifesto we will realise that the party is not even halfway through the many promises they made to the good people of this country. The same applies to the NPP. Many of our politicians have become liars; their words do not carry any weight. WHILE condemning Mr Agyapong for his unguarded statements, we at Today also seize the opportunity to caution other foul-mouthed politicians, especially those with the penchant for insults. We all need to understand that Ghana is our motherland. Therefore, it is imperative that we JEALOUSLY guard and sustain the PEACE that we are currently enjoying.
