The
Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP),
Nana Akufo Addo, has disappointed many Ghanaians as he ran away from a
question on the genocidal statements made by the NPP Member of
Parliament (MP) for Assin North, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong on his radio
station, Oman FM.
The NPP firebrand, a few weeks ago, declared
war against Ewes and Gas, which many, including Religious bodies, the
National Peace Council, Civil Society Groups among others have
condemned.
Others have asked that he resigns from Parliament as
such statements should not come from a Member of Parliament. The case
has since been sent to court where he is facing three charges; treason,
treason felony and attempted genocide.
Many have been calling on
the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo to comment on the issue since such
statements have the potential of disturbing the peace of the country as
the country heads for elections in December, 2012.
When the
opportunity presented itself for the NPP flag-bearer courtesy a direct
question posed by a journalist, Akufo-Addo’s answer was simply “the case
is in court!”
A section of the public interviewed by The
Al-Hajj was unanimous in disappointment in Nana Addo for not condemning
Kennedy Agyepong’s irresponsible statements, adding that “he probably
supports him and this also gives credence to his ‘all-die-be-die’
mantra”.
It may be recalled that, Nana Addo, a year ago told NPP
supporters in Koforidua to stand firm and be courageous since the ruling
National Democratic Congress (NDC) party will try to steal the votes
and hang on to power stating, “one must understand that this party (NPP)
was formed by courageous people. Our founders who formed this party
that has now become the biggest political movement in Ghana were not
cowards. So in 2012 we need to be courageous because all die be die! All
die be die!”
Sensing what the Assin North MP said could cost him
votes in the Volta Region in the December polls, Nana Akufo Addo in
less than 48 hours after he declined comment on the matter beat a
retreat and junketed to Ho to appease to the Volta Regional Chiefs.
In
an address at the Volta Regional House of Chiefs he told the chiefs “we
celebrate the fact that Ghana stands tall amongst nations as having a
rich society of diversity, tolerance and collaboration.
Ours is a
society, multi-ethnic and multi-religious diversity and we have found
the wisdom to live in peaceful co-existence. What is left, however, is
how the leaders of this nation can use the prevailing atmosphere of
peace, unity, diversity and harmony to enhance the dignity and
prosperity of every Ghanaian”.
In a repentant posture, Nana Addo
added “an interesting feature of our country is that you can find every
ethnic group in every region. Ghanaians have never felt restrained by
the place of their birth in determining where they live or work in our
country”. |

This, a Deputy Minister of
Information, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa finds as laughable stating that,
the NPP and their flag-bearer cannot eat their cake and have it and that
Nana Addo is being “insincere” and “opportunistic” and his speech to
the Chiefs on Friday was only meant to win votes in the Volta Region.
Some
people the Al-Hajj spoke to, questioned why the NPP, including Nana
Addo continues to comment on judgment debt paid to businessman Alfred
Agbesi Woyome when his case is also before the law courts.
Woyome,
who was paid Fifty-two million Ghana Cedis as judgment debt for
financial engineering consultancy work he offered to the government of
Ghana towards the CAN 2008 stadia construction is alleged to have gotten
the money through misrepresentation and false pretense.
As a
result, the case has been sent to court but has already received
‘judgment’ from the opposition NPP and their allies who claimed Woyome
got the money through fraudulent means.
